Although we were both born in London, after my Service in the Royal Marines in 1962 my wife and I decided we would raise our family in Hertford. This was the best decision we ever made, and two of our children attended Simon Balle while the third won a scholarship to Haileybury. I became active in community affairs soon after arriving in Hertford. Usually acting as Treasurer, I served on the committees of three residents’ associations, arguing for good facilities from both estate builders and councils, and also served with the Bengeo JMI Parent-Teacher Association. I was a founder member and first Treasurer of the Hertford Civic Society during its early campaign to revitalise the town centre. In professional life I was a Certified Accountant working for large National and International Companies and holding responsibilities well beyond financial management. A varied and challenging career - I enjoyed every moment. Now retired, my life centres upon our children, their children - and teaching Scottish Country Dancing! Even so, I‘d welcome the chance to serve my Ward as District Councillor.
If elected, I would ensure the Ward’s voice was heard wherever it was needed - typically on the Bengeo “Rat Run” and the road damage it causes. Along with John Brady I’d argue for better youth facilities within the town. I’d argue for better and free car parking within the town, for better bus services to the town. Better still, if democracy could be restored and power returned to Ward Councillors, I’d argue to play a very active part in holding down council taxes and in looking at a value-for-money service from the Council.
