Jim Thornton's Election Blog - Party vs Independent

A good column in the Times yesterday by David Aaronovitch pointing out the problems faced by Independents, and arguing that we are not going to get better local politics until more power is pushed down the line. One thing parties do provide is research support, and this is a problem for Independents. On the other hand, Independents can speak out freely and enhance transparency, and we have a classic example of Party vs Independent in Hertford St Andrews Division with the proposed Richard Hale Community Sports Hall. Peter Ruffles and I met with the Head, the Chair of Governors and some other Governors on Saturday morning, and the voters are going to have a choice:  do you think we are more likely to get a Communituy Sports Hall with another four years of behind the scenes Party manoevering (which has not worked so far) or with an open debate and public involvement in pressing the decision makers?
